What Are New Jersey Divorce Records?

In New Jersey, divorce documents are created upon the legal dissolution of a marriage, civil union, or domestic partnership and contain important data such as names, dates, petitions, and court orders. Grounds for divorce include adultery, abandonment, extreme cruelty, and irreconcilable differences, the latter being the most common in no-fault cases. There are divorces that can be contested and there are divorces that can be non contested and the latter is typically resolved much faster than the former. Records such as divorce certificates and divorce final judgments are in custody of the Superior Court Clerk’s Office. It is accessible through the archival system of the family record, however, it requires proved identity of the parties or their representatives.
